Degung Surupan 57

Gamelan Degung is a gamelan style specific to Sunda in West Java. The Degung gamelan set has six notes that cover two different scales: the Degung scale (La-Ti-Na-Mi-Da) and the Madenda scale (La-Ti-Ni-Mi-Da). The extra note added to the five Degung tones that allows playing in Madenda is known as the "selap" tone (extra tone). In practice Sundanese musicians use only one of the scales (or modes) at a time.

The base note, Da, is tuned to 401 Hz, which matches the base frequency produced by a 57cm long six-hole Suling. Because the base tone is lower than a Pelog Salendro gamelan, the characteristics of these scales are different than those of the Salendro-based scales. See A Guide to Sundanese Gamelan Tuning for more information.

Here are the six tones available in the Degung gamelan set:

An example of traditional gamelan Degung music with the Degung scale can be heard at: Sabi Lulungan. The Madenda scale can be heard at Rumaos. In contemporary gamelan music both tunings can be used simultaneously, even mixed with Western scales, as has been done for many years by the Evergreen Club Contemporary Gamelan of Toronto Canada.
