Maqam

Maqam (pl. maqamat):

  1. the modal melodic system used in the Arab world, with variants stretching from North Africa through Western Asia, including music from Arabic speaking countries as well as Turkey, Iran, Azerbaijan, and Central Asia. Maqam includes a system of scales with varied tuning schemes, along with a rich melodic vocabulary and patterns of modulation (movement among scales).
  2. ("a maqam") one of the modes used, with a particular scale and melodic vocabulary and set of expected modulations.
