Jins
Jins (pl. ajnas): a scale fragment of 3, 4, or 5 notes with a specific mood and melodic vocabulary. Arabized form of the word "genus" (from Greek), it means a "type" or "kind" or "species" of something, and in Ancient greek theory, adopted by the Arabs, refers to a "tetrachord genus" - a scale fragment with a particular set of intervals. Traditional Arabic music theory treats a jins as the first or second half of a maqam scale, but an examination of repertory and improvisation shows that multiple ajnas are expected as part of any given maqam, and that modulation in Arabic music is more frequently from jins to jins in the same maqam rather than from maqam to maqam.
